Installing a swing gate operator to "swing in" as in the normal way can cause a problem when the arm gets pinched between the gate and an oversized column. This would prevent full opening of the gate as well as damage the operator arm. Providing a "pocket" as shown here is only one option. Gates and openers mounted at the corner of a fence can also create a pinch fit situation.
